Shattuck, Lemuel. Report on the Sanitary Conditions of Massachusetts.

April 25, 1850

In the report presented to the Massachusetts legislature, Shattuck concludes that environmental and social factors are compromising public health and that poor waste management is causing the outbreak of disease. The survey finds that Boston has 32 miles of sewers, one of the most extensive systems of any city in the U.S.
